"The So-Called Painted Desert"

    Holbrook, AZ

    June 20 through June 21, 2004

Story by Debbie

Painted Desert is just north of Petrified Forest, and it's an epic, sweeping vista type of place.  It's just a mile or so off the interstate--suddenly there's a gigantic opening in the ground.   You can go backpacking down in the bottom, but there's not much shade except in the shadows of rocks.  We stayed up top, but even from there we could tell it wasn't really painted.

 Epic vista.  Sweeping vista.

Good view of the scar on my shin from when I busted up my sail and lost my watch in Corpus.   Close to sunset.   Carey on the rocks.

Monochrome.    The big view.    Several geologic periods represented here, I'm sure.
